PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is a multiplayer online battle royale video game developed by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Korean publisher Bluehole. The game is based on previous mods that were developed by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games using the 2000 film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.
The game was released for Microsoft Windows via Steam's early access program in March 2017. By the end of the year, it had sold over twenty million copies and had a peak concurrent player count of over two million, making it the most played game on the platform. A full release out of early access is planned for late December 2017. That same month, the game will also be released on Xbox One via the Xbox Game Preview service. The game is also planned to be localized and released by Tencent in China, including a version there for mobile devices.
